Today's #educationedition #WCW is LITERALLY known worldwide... my big sister, Mrs. Chejuana Willis-Martin! Growing up, she was more adamant than me when she said that she would never teach.
Proverbs 19:21
"Many are the plans in a man's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails."
Yeahhhhh, that was us. So how did the "teaching bug" enthrall my sister??? Her love of adventure and travel!!! While living in Phoenix, AZ, an opportunity to teach abroad presented itself. She taught in Japan for 5 years and has pretty much NOT looked back since then.
Since her initial foray in education, she has taught almost every subject that you can think of [with a specialty in English... her fav] and at almost every grade level. After earning her Master's degree, she was briefly an Assistant Principal at a school that she absolutely loved.
Now this is when I learned a most important lesson from her about the world of education... I'd venture to say the lesson that prompted me to start on this path in my educational career. That school that she loved so very much, seemingly turned their backs on her. Her hard work, her dedicated mind and heart, her true love of her scholars and teammates were essentially spit upon. That old adage of "it's not what you know but who you know" reared its ugly head.
Her response: "Don't worry sissie. Sometimes the Lord has to forcibly close a door so that we can see the possibility of so many other ones that He's opened for us."
Her next gig: Assistant Principal position... in CHINA!!!
From there she has just soared, with no limits in sight. The world of education can be extremely spirit crushing at times... EXTREMELY!! I've quit this career so many times, just to be drawn back in by those kiddos of mine, by their loving families, by my amazing colleagues, by my heart.
